Why Slash the Canvas? is a zine publication targeted towards teens in New Zealand. The primary cause is to garner young people’s interest in Art History, and to offer a view of the subject beyond an institutional framework as taught in schools. The zine is branded around the values of inclusivity, creativity and curiosity. It does so by exploring intersectionality in art, specifically shining a light on female and Maori artists. The zine will be a work of collaboration between people of different communities, with each contributor bring their own artistic and critical voice to the palimpsest of art histoty.
The ultimate goal of Why Slash the Canvas? is for students to develop a passion for art history and in the future engage with it in an interrogative, meaningful way.
